There are a tremendous number of needlework fabrics being manufactured at the present time. Our favorite fabric is linen, and we try very hard to keep a good inventory of most of the available linens on hand, plus a substantial number of other fabrics on the market. However, if you are looking for a fabric that is not listed, we can special-order almost any fabric that is available (minimum quantities may apply for special orders). Please contact us for pricing and availability of fabrics that are not listed below.

Fabrics are sold by the yard, by fractions of a yard (such as 1/2 yard, 3/4 yard), and by the running or lineal inch. A running inch is the full width of fabric; in most cases 55" wide. Fabrics are also sold in several different precut sizes, as listed below. All measurements of cut fabrics are listed as height (selvedge edge) x width. Measurements are given in yards and inches. Approximate metric equivalents of measurements used are as follows:

Evenweave Linen

18 COUNT LINEN by the Danish Handcraft Guild is available in bleached (off-white #7B) or unbleached (natural brown #7U). It is 55" wide.

19 COUNT "CORK" LINEN by Zweigart has been described in print by the manufacturer as a 19 count linen, an 18 count linen and a 20 count linen, but we are going to call it 19 count. It is 55" wide.

White, Antique White, Cream, and Natural/Raw and Cork Linen are currently in production in Germany and should normally be available; Flax, Dirty Linen and Light Blue are not currently being made in Germany and only available while supplies last:

25 COUNT "DUBLIN" LINEN by Zweigart has a 2011 color range of only five colors. We have a limited supply of discontinued colors. All are 55" wide.

28 COUNT "CASHEL" LINEN by Zweigart is a nice, soft linen that is less sheer than some other linens. It is similar to "Belfast" linen (Belfast linen is 32 threads per inch while Cashel is 28 threads per inch). Cashel linen has a 2011 German color range of only sixteen solid colors. Other Cashel linen colors may be available in limited amounts. We will indicate below which colors may have limited availability. Cashel linen is 55" wide.

29-30 COUNT LEGACY LINEN is a very high-quality linen. It has the wonderful characteristics of linen (including some unevenness in the diameter of the thread) but is not as irregular as some of the other linens on the market; on the other hand, it has more "body" than Zweigart linen without actually being stiff. Please note that this linen is described in some places as a 30 count linen; however, it is probably more accurate to say it is a 29.5 count (the difference is negligible unless you need to determine with precision a design size).

Available in Winter White, Swan White, Parchment, Crushed Strawberry, Pink Pearl, Sistine Blue, Creme de Menthe, Soft Willow, Baltic Green, Pink Clay, Cameo Shell and Vanilla Gold. 55" wide.

22 COUNT HARDANGER by Zweigart is 100% cotton. White, antique white and ivory are always stocked (various other colors are also occasionally stocked, or may be special-ordered; please inquire if you have a need). Standard width is 42" (66" width is also available in white and ivory only, by special order).

25 COUNT LUGANA by Zweigart is 52% cotton/48% rayon. It is primarily used for counted cross stitch; many people also use it for Hardanger embroidery. Zweigart has recently given the name "Lugana," which used to be only a 25 count fabric, to several of their other fabrics with different thread counts, so that now "Lugana" comes in several different counts. We stock it primarily in 25 count, which is what is listed below. Colors are in alphabetical order within price categories. 55" wide.

NEEDLEPOINT CANVAS BY ZWEIGART

DELUXE MONO CANVAS is 100% cotton, woven in a regular mono weave. It is generally considered to be the best quality of canvas. The standard width of this canvas is 40".

Interlock Canvas is 100% cotton woven in "interlock" weave (interlock weave canvas unravels less easily than mono, is somewhat thinner and rougher). It is 40" wide.

Penelope Canvas is 100% cotton canvas woven in Penelope weave (double-thread construction). It is brown in color, and 36" wide. We have been told that the 12, 13 and 14 mesh brown Penelope are no longer available in the US.

22 mesh "Cordova" Canvas is 100% cotton needlepoint canvas. It used to be available in both yellow and white but now it comes in white only. It is 24" wide.

CONGRESS CLOTH by Zweigart is a 24 mesh mono weave canvas. It is 50" wide, and comes in several colors.

SILK GAUZE

This product is used for very fine canvaswork and miniature needlework. Made of 100% silk and very sturdy, it disappeared from the market for a while, but is once again available. If you would like to read about working on silk gauze, click here. We cannot get many of the counts that were formerly available. Currently available sizes are 31/32 mesh (beige, blue-gray, sea green, bronze-brown and black) and 40 mesh (beige and black only), and 64 count (beige only). We have VERY limited availability of all except for counts 31/32 in beige and 40 count in beige. We do not anticipate any trouble being able to keep these two counts in stock. Please ask about availability of other counts/colors before ordering. Please note also that there is often a slight variation in count from batch to batch of silk gauze so please allow for this possibility. Canvas is 40" wide, and there will be a certain amount of waste as the canvas closest to the selvedges is often distorted. Silk gauze is available from us two ways: by the yard (you may buy any number of inches as long as you buy the full width), or in cut pieces.

It is important to have silk gauze firmly stretched to prevent distortion, and this can be done by taping it into a mat opening that you provide; or the gauze can be mounted on stretcher bars like any other type of needlepoint canvas (we would recommend the mini stretcher bars); or the gauze can be basted firmly onto a piece of scrap fabric that then can be mounted in a hoop or other type of frame, with a window cut into the scrap fabric to expose the gauze for stitching.

WASTE CANVAS

This is a type of flimsy white Penelope canvas which is used to stitch counted designs on non-countable fabric (the waste canvas is basted onto the non-countable fabric, stitches are made using the waste canvas as a guideline, then the basting threads are removed, the waste canvas is dampened, and then unraveled thread by thread from underneath the stitched design). For ease of counting, a blue thread is woven every ten thread pairs on mesh sizes 6.5 through 16; 18 and 20 mesh are solid white.

NON-EVENWEAVE LINENS

For those who wish to do embroidery that is not counted (such as crewel embroidery, whitework, etc.) we offer the following linens.

CREWEL LINEN is a substantial linen with a wonderful feel. It is not extremely fine, but neither would it be considered "coarse." Available from us in two colors, oyster (off-white) and natural (an oatmeal/beige color). It is 54" wide. Please note that there is a difference in price between the two colors.

Linen Twill is used for traditional crewel embroidery. Twill is a type of fabric weave and linen twill is very sturdy. We offer it in a soft white/oyster color and also beige/tan.

ECCLESIASTICAL LINEN is a very fine but substantial, pure white linen, perfect for cutwork embroidery or any other embroidery where you wish a fine background. Because of its width, it is perfect for table linens. It is 63" wide.

SHADOWWORK LINEN is a sheer, handkerchief-type linen perfect for shadowwork embroidery and other very delicate embroidery. It comes in bright white, and is 73" wide.

Schwalm Linen is used in Germany for lovely Schwalm embroidery (for books on Schwalm embroidery, click here). It is also suitable for Casalguidi, Hedebo and other forms of fine drawn thread embroidery. This fabric is now known in the US as "Alba Maxima" or "Legacy Alba Maxima" and is described as a 40 count linen; however, that is only an approximate count and the count is not necessarily identical in the warp and weft directions. It is a fine, relatively tightly woven linen with an approximate thread count of 38/39. It is available in white only and is 55" wide.
